Jesus' family journey | Egypt Series (Part 1) – 07

Back to series home

According to Matthew’s Gospel, we read that Joseph was warned in a dream to take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt to escape Herod’s reign of terror. They came down to Egypt and Jesus spent some of his childhood growing up here. After the death of Herod, an angel again appeared to Joseph in a dream and told them to leave Egypt and return to Israel. These events surrounding Jesus in Egypt, fulfilled the prophecy found in Hosea concerning the Messiah who would come out of Egypt.

Looking around

The Gospel of Matthew draws several parallels between Jesus the Messiah and Moses, who liberated the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. Matthew mentions Jesus’ parents fleeing to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod. Centuries later, Egyptian Christians built the Church of the Virgin Mary where Jesus and his mother had allegedly begun their boat trip to Upper Egypt. The church is located on the outskirts of modern Cairo.
