When we’re not busy scrolling on our phones, we may decide to open a book and start to read, page by page. In antiquity people didn’t have books but scrolls, which could be unrolled before and rolled up after reading. Scrolls were commonly made of the papyrus plant using a technique invented in ancient Egypt. The use of parchment – animal skin – for writing was introduced by the Romans much later.
