In the book of Kings, we read about the prophet Elijah. After a stunning victory defeating the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, he flees in terror from Queen Jezebel. Elijah is a broken and defeated man who wishes to die. Angels provide him with food and water which sustain his journey to Mount Sinai to meet with God. In a cave, after fire and earthquake, Elijah encounters the ‘still small voice’ of God, and he is restored.
Looking around
Herman Melville’s Ahab, captain of the ill-fated ship which set sail to destroy a white whale in the novel Moby-Dick, is named after an equally doomed biblical king, whose Phoenician wife Jezebel tried to establish Baal worship in Israel. She was fiercely opposed by God’s prophet Elijah. Exhausted after a final showdown with the prophets of Baal, Elijah ran from Ahab and Jezebel, unaware that he was about to run into God himself.
