The Egyptian Pharaoh Shishak is referenced in the Old Testament book of Kings. We are told in 1 Kings 3 that Solomon (the king of Israel) made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh. Solomon took Pharaoh's daughter to Jerusalem, to the City of David. But the alliance between Egypt and Israel would one day backfire, when Solomon’s son Rehoboam was king. Intelligence had been gleaned and Shishak was able to invade Jerusalem and steal all of its treasures. God had warned Israel not to make such alliances; years down the line, his people found out why.
Looking around
Warrior king David had united the tribes of Israel. In the reign of his son Solomon, Israel enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity. Even so, Solomon’s realm was small compared to the mighty Egyptian neighbour to the southwest. Solomon’s marriage to Pharaoh’s daughter made political sense, but God wanted his people to trust in him rather than in political alliances.
