My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘Psalm 23 is my rock, rudder and the frothy hundreds and thousands on the cake. My favourite line is verse 4, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me: your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
‘This helps me to know that God is with me, by my side. It makes me feel secure. I have family members who are bipolar and one who has Asperger’s, so some days I feel like I’m having a battle and I stomp round my house saying this verse.
‘It’s like a balm, like ointment. Sometimes its effect is subtle. Sometimes it’s powerful. Sometimes I think of it and stamp my feet. Sometimes I declare it. I don’t always need to understand it, but it is there. It’s very calming, and gives me breath.
‘I love being outdoors. I am a silversmith and God is in the tiny parts of the things that I see and then create in silver. These verses are what I feel when I am outside. There is such joy in them, not a hands-in-the-air joy, but in a soft way. I have got a lot going on in my life, but it never crosses my mind that I am the backstop in my own life. God is. When you accept this psalm, it’s a tremendous thing.’
