When prophets lie: 1 Kings 13.11–32 (Day 283)

Lord, open my ears to hear what you have to say to me; open my heart to love your word, and open my mind to understand your truth.

Daily reflection: 1 Kings 13

A prophet from Judah has confronted Israel's new king, Jeroboam, and asserted God's authority over him. As a symbol of God's rejection of Jeroboam's regime, he is not to accept hospitality on his way home. A foolish old Israelite prophet decides he knows better, though. Out of curiosity or the desire to bask in the reflected glory of this courageous man, he falsely claims God had told him to take him home. Too late, he realises what he's done (verses 20–22).

Both prophets have lessons for us. Like the old Israelite, we are tempted to see things the way we want to see them and to imagine God approves of our choices. When we use 'spiritual' language or a position of spiritual authority to get our own way, we are capable of doing terrible damage. We might not intend harm – like the old prophet – but selfishness and folly are harmful anyway.

The Judaean prophet had a clear command from God, but he allowed himself to be diverted from his path by someone else's arguments. It's not surprising: the Israelite had all the right words, and was due respect because of his age and status. But he was still a liar. We should avoid the kind of arrogance that refuses to listen to advice. But we should have the courage of our convictions, too, and know when to refuse to be diverted from the task God has given to us – no matter who tries to persuade us otherwise.

Pray

Pray

God, give me discernment to know when you are speaking through other people. Keep me from arrogance, but keep my purpose firm.
