Bible reading: Mark 8.34–38

The Bible is clear that following Jesus might lead to suffering – in the short term at least. The question is – is it worth the cost?

Lots of things in life cost us, whether in money, or in time, or in physical or emotional effort. And we’re constantly making decisions as to whether it's going to be worth it.

At a sports event last summer I spent an inordinate amount on a small portion of chips. In retrospect it just wasn’t worth it. The equation between the amount it cost me and the amount it satisfied my hunger just didn’t add up.

On a more serious note, following Jesus can cost an awful lot. For some of us, it might cost in terms of some social awkwardness, or cost us some worldly short-term pleasure. For others, it can cost even more. It can cost friendships, family and livelihoods. It can even cost lives.

For Jesus, his commitment to us cost his life – through a barbaric death by crucifixion.

But as a result, we have been raised up with Christ. We are seated with him in the heavenly realms, and saved by the incomparable riches of his grace. See Ephesians chapter 2 for more on that.

The cost of following Jesus may be great, but the reward is greater.

Jesus himself said, ‘What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?’ (Mark 8.36)

The whole world is worth nothing, in comparison with Jesus, who is worth it all.
