Bible reading: Revelation 5

When I was a kid, one of my favourite pastimes was Top Trumps. You’d have a deck of cards, shuffle them and cut them in two. You’d then corner an unsuspecting friend, shove half a pack in his hands and shout ‘Top Trumps!’ Each card had a series of stats, and you’d try and trump the stat of your foe. I’d say, ‘Top speed 150 mph!’ and if it beat his card, I’d win it (aim of the game – get all the cards). OK, Top Trumps might not fill you with awe and wonder, but Revelation 5 might.

It’s a picture of how the God story ends. How the feature film of life as we know it draws to a close and the new chapter begins. God gives John a sneak peek, front row seat for how it will all eventually unfold. He sees a vision of Jesus’ return and worldwide lap of victory over sin, death and brokenness.

In verse 12 he sees angels beyond count bellow in unison, with great gusto, ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.’

To say he is worthy of our affections is like saying the Shard in London is pretty tall, or the Sistine Chapel ceiling is not a bad paint job. It’s an understatement. Jesus is the top card and trumps all others.

He’s the one who was slain yet sits on the throne and reigns. He is so worthy of our affections. May we pin his card to our hearts and may we join in with the angels and echo their line on repeat: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.’
