My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘My life is quite tricky. Thirteen years ago, I had a phone call from the kids saying that their mum couldn’t move. Her spine was crumbling, and later she was diagnosed as having only half a brain. I haven’t worked since. I do everything. I wash her, feed her. Every day is different.
‘I haven’t been a Christian very long, maybe six or seven years. When I bought my Bible, I read Isaiah 43.1–3, which says, “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up.” It says that God is going through the tricky times with me.
‘I get frustrated and angry. But God gives me peace when I don’t know what to tell the kids, and enables me to carry on when things are emotionally draining. It is such a comfort to know that God is with me.
‘There have been some really dark times when I just couldn’t cope anymore. This week, my daughter was admitted to a mental health unit. She had tried to kill herself. I feel sick inside. But I really can feel God’s presence in this.
‘I shout at God and then apologise. I would have committed suicide without that verse, because the stress has been horrendous. It drains you. It’s been tough, but that verse has kept me alive and given me hope, and without hope you have nothing.’
