My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
'I worked in the City for many years. Life was brilliant on the trading floor. If you couldn’t stand pressure and didn’t have a sense of humour, it wasn’t the place to be!
One lunchtime, two of my colleagues asked me to go to St Helen’s Bishopsgate with them. I went along just to be argumentative. Why did I need Jesus? What were they going on about? There were about 600 blokes there and then Dick Lucas stood up and preached from Colossians 1.15-23.
This says, “The son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together…” and so on.
This struck a rich chord with me. It wasn’t a blinding light moment. It was more of a Homer Simpson “Doh!”. It seemed logical to me. If I hadn’t come to faith through those verses, I’d have had a glittering time in the City of London, but not necessarily with a purpose in life.
I don’t think we would have coped with the things that have come our way. My wife miscarried twins. Then she nearly died giving birth to our second child, who herself nearly died four months later.
It would have been difficult to be resourced for that without the Bible. That passage gives me hooks to start to understand the immenseness of who God is.
Through my telescope at home I look at just a part of what he has done. There are billions of galaxies. Christ upholds them and is the means of their creation. It’s utterly mind blowing.'
