My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘I was raised in a non-believing family. We scoffed at the idea of there being a God when it was brought up at the CofE primary school I attended. I can remember sitting in school feeling a sense of superiority because I was too smart for the lie of Christianity.
‘My gran became a born-again believer. It came out of the blue. This left a big impact on me because my gran had turned her back on God for most of her adult life, following the death of her husband in his early thirties.
‘My gran gave me a Bible. It was left untouched under my bed for over five years. Then, one morning three years ago, I felt a strong pull from the Lord to open that Bible from under the bed and read it, and God saved me that very day.
‘I read the book of Romans, which lays out the fallen condition of man, and I knew the truth of it. By the end of the first chapter, I was convinced. The long list of sins in Romans 1.28–32 resonated with me then. I could see myself in this story, and not in a good way. I became convinced of my need for salvation.
‘Now, I work in full-time ministry and study theology part-time. God has changed me and my life in such a deep way, and it all started through simply sitting down and reading what he has said to us.
‘I realised that the Bible isn’t just the entry point into the Christian life, it’s also the fuel for the Christian life. Sitting down at Jesus’ feet and listening to his words is the most significant part of my daily routine.’
