My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘I lost my brother in 2010. That was the year that I thought he’d get married. He came down with sickness. Apparently, he had a damaged liver, which he didn’t realise and that it had become cancerous and spread to other parts of his body.
‘He went for an operation and I left him. I called in the middle of the night. I thought everything would be OK. But the nurse said, “I’m sorry. He didn’t make it.”
‘The verse that helped me was Hebrews 6:19, which says, “which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil”. It was an assurance that my hope was anchored in the knowledge that though I’m in this pain, God’s faithfulness will come through. I will see him one day.
‘He was like my oldest son. I raised him. My mum gave birth to him when I was in my teens. So, I changed his nappy. I took him to school. We were very close.
‘I realised that death is not desirable, but in the eyes of God, it’s not the end of the world. This scripture kept me still and gave me stability. In this time of pain, it strengthened me. I arranged his funeral. God’s love was a steadying factor.’
