Lord, prepare me to receive your word. Clear my mind and warm my heart. Assure me of your loving purposes for me, and speak into my life today.

Daily reflection: Psalm 50

We're in another wisdom psalm today, and this time the lesson is about how you relate to God. In short, the wisdom is: with gratitude!

Setting the scene in verses 1–2, the psalmist depicts God as a mighty and glorious judge, looking for those whom he calls his people. God has no complaint with their sacrifices (verse 8) – they’re doing the right things – and yet a deeper desire is made known: he wants their gratitude and he wants them to come to him for help.

The Old Testament can seem to record a phase of history where God's relationship with people hangs only on rules. But the truth is, God's desire for true, honest, trusting relationships with his people is there from the beginning. This psalm is just one reminder of that truth.

You don’t have to spend long online to find mindfulness advice about stopping to be grateful. Great! But it's good to remember where it is that we direct our gratitude: to God who gave us everything.

Pray

Pray

Lord, I thank you that you delight in my gratitude as much as any other sacrifice I make to you. Thank you for all you've given me and that every good and perfect gift comes from you.
