Daily reflection: 1 Corinthians 9

Having urged the most confident in the Corinthian church to rethink their right to exercise their freedom in Christ for the sake of someone else’s weaker conscience, Paul now speaks personally about refraining from certain rights for the sake of his calling.

Although he would be permitted to marry, as other apostles have done, Paul has remained single. Although he could demand a pastor’s salary, he has been earning his keep, so as not to be a burden to the Corinthian church. Although some in the community question his right to call himself an apostle, possibly because he didn’t walk with the earthly Jesus or had formerly persecuted Christians, Paul swallows his pride and reaches out to those who resist his authority.

Paul sets an inspiring example of humility, spiritual discipline and focus on the ultimate prize: ‘All this I do for the gospel's sake, in order to share in its blessings’ (verse 23).

Thank you, Lord, for Paul’s example. Give me wisdom to discern where I might need to put my calling above my rights.
