Lord, open my ears to hear what you have to say to me; open my heart to love your word, and open my mind to understand your truth.

Daily reflection: Zechariah 4

The prophet's visions continue. There is an elaborate lampstand which symbolises the wisdom and power of God, and either side of it are two olive trees, an emblem of fruitfulness. These stand for Joshua the High Priest and Zerubbabel, who are working with Nehemiah to rebuild the Temple. Zerubbabel was appointed as governor of Judah by the ruling Persians, but he was the grandson of the exiled King Jehoiachin (2 Kings 24.8–17) and therefore a descendant of King David. Between the two of them they represent the hope of a restored nation – but Zechariah's confidence is tempered with realism. He doesn't prophesy the overthrow of the mighty Persians, but a different kind of rule. 'You will succeed, not by military might or by your own strength, but by my spirit,' the angel says (verse 6). The crowning glory for Joshua and Zerubbabel will come with the rebuilding of the Temple; as they put the last stone in place, 'the people will shout, “Beautiful, beautiful!”’

It can be very tempting to hark back to the glory days, when everything was better. We too stand in God's light, though. What is he showing us today, and how can we be fruitful? Only 'by my spirit' – paying careful attention to God's priorities, and building the temple of his Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2.20–22).

Pray

Pray

God, help me to look back and learn; and help me to look forward and hope. Let me never be chained by what's past, and let me trust in your future.
