A water cistern was an artificial reservoir dug into the earth for storing vital fresh water supplies. A cracked or broken cistern was virtually useless. The prophet Jeremiah used this illustration of a broken cistern to warn God’s people that they were spiritually bankrupt and empty and that they were facing dire consequences. In Jeremiah 38, we read that Jeremiah’s words were rejected and that he was dropped into a cistern to die. He survived, but his prophecies were realised when Israel experienced exile around 586 BC.
