The Serpent and the Seed

This mobile game explores the big story of the Bible and it’s a passion project for PrayerMate founder Andy Geers

At Bible Society we’re all about helping people to discover the big story of the Bible. With your support, we’re introducing the cohesive, hope-filled message running right through Scripture to people who have never experienced it before. And we’re not the only ones creating innovative opportunities for people to gain a fresh perspective on the word of God.

Andy Geers, found of the PrayerMate app which helps people organise their prayer time, has always wanted to develop a Bible-based video game. With a little help from Bible Society, Andy’s dream has come alive and by Easter next year The Serpent & the Seed (developed by the charity he heads up, Discipleship Tech) should be available to play.

The turning point for The Serpent & the Seed came in 2018 when Bible Society sponsored the annual Christians-in-technology gathering Andy is involved in, Kingdom Code. At the event, Bible Society shared some of the research data we were then feeding into our Lumino resource. As he heard that around a quarter of people are wanting to know more about Bible, Andy remembered his stalled project.

‘Because of PrayerMate and family and stuff, it had gone on the backburner,’ Andy said. ‘But that stat really sparked my enthusiasm again.’ People are looking for a meaningful narrative about who we are, and they’re not closed to the possibility that it might be found in the Bible. It all came together for Andy: ‘I just thought, “The time is now!”’

The Serpent & the Seed explores the Bible’s big story, going back to the root of the problem in the Garden of Eden. The promise of rescue is first heard in Genesis 3.15, when God declares that Eve’s seed will crush the head of the serpent. Andy’s game traces that awesome promise through the Bible to its realisation in Jesus.

It’s ambitious, especially for a game that will be completely free to play. Inspired by games with exceptional sound and music, Andy has got one of his favourite bands on board. The husband-and-wife duo, Poor Bishop Hooper, are composing original songs to help carry the game’s message and create a compelling atmosphere.

Discipleship Tech has almost two thirds of the funding it needs, but he says there’s lots more work to be done over the next 14 months. He’ll be building an interactive gameplay onto the beautiful sounds and images his artistic collaborators have produced. He’s set very high standards, and quite rightly. He’s telling the greatest story ever told.

You can learn more about The Seed & the Serpent on its website. Find out how you can help Discipleship Tech get over the final hurdles and open up the big story of the Bible to more people through a gaming experience.
