Vanity

In Ecclesiastes, the Hebrew word hebel, which literally means ‘vapour’, is translated as vanity (ESV, NRSV, KJV) – or useless (GNB), or meaningless (NIV). The nuance of its meaning changes slightly depending on the context in which the word is used, but it conveys a sense of something short-lived, never quite satisfying, or ultimately pointless.
