Ephraim

The second son of Joseph and Asenath (the first being Manasseh). Like Manasseh, Ephraim was the founding member of the tribe that bore his name and hence of the tribe of Joseph. In numerous places in the Old Testament, Ephraim is used as an alternative name for Israel to refer to the Northern Kingdom, Israel, which split from the Southern Kingdom, Judah, in 722 BC.
