Margaret’s story

Author: Bible Society, 22 August 2019

‘It was 1997, about 10 days before Princess Diana died. My husband Brian was 44. He said, “Why don’t I take the boys camping?”. The last time I saw him alive he was standing in the kitchen making sandwiches. It was that dramatic.

‘He went off with the boys and he never came back. Of course, later in the day the police arrived. He had had a heart attack from just out of nowhere. It was a very hot day. He just died on the mountain. He wasn’t doing anything dangerous. He just slipped away. Nobody could save him.

‘We were full of energy. We were young. Then I was a widow and the boys didn’t have a dad. It was horrendous. At the worst period, I just used to read Psalm 23 every day.

‘I was walking through the Valley of the Shadow of Death when Brian died, but it’s part of the Psalm, so I knew not to fear. I was walking through the Valley but God was with me. I knew I would come out the other end. It kept me going.’
