Silence...

At both of our recent retreats at Lee Abbey we asked guests to do something they hardly ever get to do in their everyday lives – take time for stillness and silence. In fact we had nearly 24 hours of silence!

Most of the conferences, events and festivals on offer, hardly ever create time for people to simply be silent with God and yet it is so crucial to our life with God.

In a world full of noise, interaction and stimulation, silence allows us to reflect and give space for God to speak to us. If Jesus needed to find mountains to get away from the noise of his culture – I can only imagine we must need it even more today.

Silence isn't easy, it can feel like we are wasting time, we may not want to stop and face the condition of our soul – but silence is good for us, it brings clarity, strength, freedom and can make us more present around other people. The challenge is how do we work this out in our everyday, noisy lives? How do we create space to be silent, to be still and know that he is God?
