Lyfe detox day 29: What matters – clarifying priorities

As we come towards the end of our lyfe detox podcasts, we turn our attention towards our priorities and the most important things in life. A good indicator of what’s most important to us is what we think and talk about most. Today’s reading is about the subject Jesus talked about most – the Kingdom of God.

Reading:

Matthew 13.44-46

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46 on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Reflection:

Arguably Jesus’ central teaching was around the Kingdom of Heaven, or the Kingdom of God, a subject he spoke about over a hundred times in the Gospels. His opening words at the start of his public ministry declared that the Kingdom of God was at hand. His preaching, with his unique authority and all the miracles that he performed were signs of the kingdom breaking in. Later his followers were sent out on missions to proclaim the in breaking of the kingdom. Predicted throughout the Old Testament, the kingdom in Jesus had become a living reality: God’s rule, his power and presence breaking through, on earth as it is in heaven.

The kingdom was Jesus’ priority. He invites us to make it ours, to seek it first above all other things because it is of extreme value, just as treasure hidden in a field or as discovering a valuable pearl. In surrendering our lives day by day to God, we take steps into the kingdom. As we make our life with God the top priority, we become residents of this new kingdom.

Prayer:

We finish today with the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
