Being and Doing

I am recently back from the United States where I attended a Renovaré conference entitled 'Spiritual Formation and the Millennial Generation'.

For me the stand-out quote from the event was this: 'We set our young leaders up for a fall if we encourage them to envision what they can do, before they consider the kind of person they should be.' (Ruth Hayley Barton).

I am reminded how easy it is to place an emphasis on action, achievement and vision above character. To be thinking about stuff we can do for God in place of simply being with God. In the story of Mary and Martha, Jesus reminds us that there is a need for us to be at his feet, in his presence, listening and receiving. Our character is as important as our service. Who we are matters more than what we say or even do. This is not an excuse for inaction, but a call for a balance of both doing and being with God each day.
