In Moses’ day, while the Hebrews were on their way from Egypt to the promised land, no temple was available for worship. Instead, the Israelites built a tabernacle – a kind of tent – which housed the ark of the covenant, a chest made of acacia wood. The ark was of utmost importance; it contained the two tablets bearing the Ten Commandments. So acacia wood, which is firm and durable, was an obvious choice.
