Bible Society in Jordan given special permission to deliver supplies

Bibles and food were distributed to needy families in Jordan by a Bible Society team given special permission by the government to bypass a coronavirus lockdown in April.

A Bible Society team member is ready to deliver Bibles and food boxes in Jordan.

Bibles were provided to adults and children, and more than 400 families received food packages in the initial round of deliveries. The plan was to reach 2,500 families in total.

‘We are so thankful for the food package, but seeing my son open up his Bible as soon as he received it was the biggest joy for me,’ said one mother.

‘Thank you with all our hearts,’ added a father who received a box of food. ‘We truly needed this package today more than ever.’

More than 650,000 refugees, many in over-crowded camps, live in Jordan after being displaced by the nine-year conflict in neighbouring Syria. The government estimates the number of refugees at closer to 2 million. These families are poor, find it difficult to get work or an education, and are particularly vulnerable during the coronavirus pandemic.

Thanks to your generous support, many of these families over the years have received Scriptures, practical help and Bible-based trauma healing.

Basic supplies and Bibles were distributed during a full coronavirus lockdown in Jordan

Six members of Bible Society in Jordan, wearing face masks, received a rare stamp of approval by the government to deliver the packages during the full lockdown in April. Liaising with church leaders, they used a new app to quickly locate the families that had been identified as being in greatest need.

In Jordan, after an initial lockdown, restrictions were eased, but when coronavirus cases started to rise again, another full lockdown was imposed.

Thanks to your continued, generous support, Bible Societies in places like Jordan are still having a massive impact in their communities despite the restrictions brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

Our Fragility

Our Fragility

Covid-19 is telling us a great deal about our own fragility. It is also shattering any illusions that might previously have existed, of us humans being in control.
