My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘When I was 20, and a student nurse in London, I attended a Bible study class, where I heard that scripture was inspired by God. The verse was 2 Timothy 3.16-17, ‘All scripture is God-breathed and it is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that all God’s people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.’
Well, that’s everything isn’t it? That was a turning point for me. Our Bible study teacher said to us that we had to mull over the scripture like a cow chewing the cud. We need to feed on it daily. I try to spend about an hour in prayer and Bible study every day.
That’s part of my daily life. I wouldn’t know what to do without it. When I was 29, I went to Brazil as a missionary. I was there for 11 years. I taught 15,000 children the gospel a week.
It was a fulfilling time. I loved it. I loved seeing lives changed. But my mother hadn’t wanted me to go. But I knew I had to. I knew it was God’s plan.
The verse that helped me then was Galatians 1.10 which talks about seeking God’s approval, not human approval. Working in Brazil was a wonderful experience. Because of it, now, I’m helping to run a Portuguese-speaking church. None of that would have happened without Galatians 1.10.’
