We run a nationwide floristry business, Bunches

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

'We run a nationwide floristry business, Bunches, that was set up by my in-laws 31 years ago. I came as a temp 24 years ago, stayed and married their daughter.

'There’s nothing that connects with people like flowers. From joy to celebration, and grief, flowers somehow manage to cross all of those scenarios and connect with people. Because people can’t visit relatives and they are going through a tough time, flowers send that emotion and that sense of care, that many other gifts can’t. Flowers say something that words can’t. It’s a way of crossing the distance between people.

'People are sending multiple orders. Other customers, who’ve known us for a long time, are just ringing up for a chat, because they are at home and have no one to talk to.

'The church that we are part of is doing a daily podcast. I was asked to do a devotion on the end of Philippians 4. Paul talks about people’s generosity in helping his ministry. I had been struggling with the idea that we had been doing well when others are struggling and on furlough. I know we want to serve God, but I couldn’t see how we were contributing to society, to the greater good.

'These verses gave me incredible comfort to realise that by running a business, ethically and successfully, we were contributing. The work we’re doing now is having a big impact on the charitable partners that we work with.

'These verses spoke to me directly when I was wondering if there was anything that we were doing that was of any value. It’s been really helpful to me, actually.'
