The verses that mean the most to me are Matthew

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

'The verses that mean the most to me are Matthew 25.34-35, which say, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”

I was working in Afghanistan. We had a business delivering fuel to the coalition. We made a lot of money, which my Afghan partner ran off with. My friends didn’t want to help. I ended up on the streets outside the Catholic Church. I was sleeping rough. It’s pretty awful on the streets, particularly when it rains.

The Catholic Church took me in and then, the night shelter has helped me too. I came here, first of all, to get a sleeping bag. The churches are the only people who have helped me. I’m very grateful for that. Life would have been more difficult without them.

Compared with sleeping rough, being at the night shelter hasn’t been so bad. You get breakfast and an evening meal, and a bedroom. I would like to start another business. I’ve always worked for myself. I’ve been here for six months. I think now that I can see a future.'
