My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘The Gospel of Luke has been my favourite for a variety of reasons. The verse that has meant so much to me for decades is Luke 24.15, “Jesus himself came up and walked along with them”. Jesus met them when they were going in the wrong direction, and turned them round.
‘He did that for me as a teenager. I wasn’t the most rebellious type. I originated from Northern Ireland and went to church four times on a Sunday. It wasn’t until I was 14 and went to the school’s Christian union that I was first made aware of the presence of Jesus coming into people’s lives.
‘The others gave their testimonies. They were nothing to write home about in terms of presentation, but God used the simplicity of them to touch my heart. I used to pray before jumping into bed. Something happened at my bedside and I began to cry. I knew that Jesus had stepped out of the history books and come into my life.
‘We had this verse at our wedding some 55 years ago. Jesus has walked with us through all the changing scenes of life, in both trouble and in joy, forever trustworthy, forever faithful, forever the same.
‘The bottom line is that he is walking with us. I take him at his word on that. I love walking. I enjoy looking at my father’s handiwork. I try to walk three miles every day and have walked about 3,000 miles over the last seven or eight years.
‘God is always there with me. I don’t go in and out of his presence. But when I’m out walking, I pray for others. I use the time to pray for people as I go.’
