My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
'Prior to becoming a Christian, I had a lot of superstitious feelings. I used to count to three before I did things. I never walked under a ladder. I would throw salt over my shoulder. I thought bad luck would befall me if I didn’t walk into the path of black cats and magpies. I knew that I needed to free myself from all this rubbish.
When I became a Christian there were two particular passages of the Bible that spoke to me. The first was John 3.16, and the second is Ephesians 2.4-10. This says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”
That gave me a sense of liberation and freedom. I knew that Christ had set me free and that I didn’t need any sort of false Gods to get set free. Now, I walk under ladders, providing there’s not a pot of paint there!
The superstitions have all gone completely. It’s freed me up. I’m a happier person because of it. I had a very unhappy life growing up, but the Bible has helped a lot and given me inner peace.'
