My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

'Pretty soon after lockdown, I wrote a song based on 2 Corinthians 1.3-4. It’s about comfort. I knew how scary and isolating it must be for everyone. I wanted to capture this situation, which was awful, still is awful, and say something positive. That was that God’s comfort is there for all of us.

'I won’t claim to know the Bible by heart, but I was aware of this verse, which says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God”. I chose it because it talks about God’s comfort empowering us to be able to comfort each other. Comfort seemed to me to be really important.

'I wrote it in a couple of days. Then my wife sang it and I played guitar. We shared it with about 50 people locally. People have said that they have found it helpful and comforting.

'Writing the song was a comfort to me. There was this prospect of long, empty days looming. That gave a focus.

'I’ve been writing songs for years and years, but worship songs since about 2005. I’ve definitely found comfort and focus through music over the past few months. My wife and I find worship to be central to our lives. Every week I go to the Bible and see what musical expression I can give to the themes for that week. It’s like visiting God, and I take comfort from that.'
