My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘Post-university, the Bible was really helpful. I had no idea what I was going to do. I felt like I was being called into youth work. I did a New Wine discipleship year and then a year with a church, and I still found I wanted to go into youth work, but it didn’t seem like it was going to happen.
‘I applied for jobs for three years. I didn’t get any interviews in the first year. The following two years, I had about a dozen interviews and there were more applications besides that.
‘It got to the point where I was about to apply for two more jobs but I thought that, if I didn’t get them, I’d stop.
‘The verses from Jeremiah 29 kept coming up. It says, “’I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you. ‘”
‘That reminded me that it was God’s plan for me to go into youth work. God’s plans don’t fail. I got the last job that I applied for and I’ve been in youth work for three years now. When I got that first job, I was glad that I hadn’t given up.
‘I love it. It’s hard work at times, but that’s a good thing. If it was easy, then there’s a chance that I would try to do it in my own strength.’
