Reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
Rhesymau i gredu ym mhŵer y Beibl
'My wife, Linda, died four years ago. We’d been married for 36 years. In 2015, we spent an amazing week on Lindisfarne. When we arrived, there was a little bookmark on my bed. It was of Psalm 32.8, ‘I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you’. That became a very important verse.
'Now, this verse is a constant reassurance that, whatever I feel, God knows about this and if I listen, I will hear him. I have discovered the value of silence in a powerful way. Before lockdown, I got into the habit of going on retreats and trying to listen to the Lord. I find that silence gives me the space to do that.
'It’s taken me years to reach this point. I’ve never been a loner, but throughout my married life I was always content to be on my own because I knew I was coming home to someone. Since I’ve been on my own, I find being on my own much less easy, to be honest.
'I realised that I have survived bereavement, and my own cancer which is incurable, by keeping active and getting out of the house. One of my faults is over-activity. Even now, I’m having a race with my daughter to see who can climb the equivalent of Ben Nevis, Snowdonia and Scafell Pike, by walking and running up and down stairs. I’m a bit daunted by Ben Nevis, because that’s going to be 672 flights of stairs.
'But this verse gives me daily assurance. It’s part of me now. I don’t even have to look at it. I can see that I was overdoing it, and that there are things that I need to face up to and deal with. That’s the way I have got to go.'
Bu farw fy ngwraig, Linda bedair blynedd yn ôl. Buon ni’n briod am 36 mlynedd. Yn 2015, treulion ni wythnos anhygoel ar Lindisfarne. Pan gyrhaeddon ni, roedd llyfrnod bach ar fy ngwely. Arno roedd Salm 32.8, ‘Hyfforddaf di a'th ddysgu yn y ffordd a gymeri; fe gadwaf fy ngolwg arnat’. Daeth hynny'n adnod bwysig iawn.
Nawr, mae'r adnod hon yn sicrwydd cyson bod Duw, beth bynnag rwy'n teimlo, yn gwybod am hyn ac os byddaf yn gwrando, byddaf yn ei glywed. Rwyf wedi darganfod gwerth tawelwch mewn ffordd bwerus. Cyn y cloi, roeddwn wedi mynd i'r arfer o fynd ar encilion a cheisio gwrando ar yr Arglwydd. Rwy'n gweld bod tawelwch yn rhoi lle i mi wneud hynny.
Mae wedi cymryd blynyddoedd i mi gyrraedd y pwynt hwn. Dwi erioed wedi bod yn un am fy nghwmni fy hun, ond trwy gydol fy mywyd priodasol roeddwn bob amser yn fodlon bod ar fy mhen fy hun oherwydd gwyddwn fy mod i'n dod adref at rywun. Ers i mi fod ar fy mhen fy hun, rwy'n canfod bod ar fy mhen fy hun yn llawer llai hawdd, a bod yn onest.
Sylweddolais fy mod wedi goroesi profedigaeth, a chanser sy'n anwelladwy, trwy gadw'n egnïol a mynd allan o'r tŷ. Un o fy meiau yw gor-weithgarwch. Hyd yn oed nawr, rydw i'n cael ras gyda fy merch i weld pwy all ddringo'r hyn sy'n cyfateb i Ben Nevis, Yr Wyddfa a Scafell Pike, trwy gerdded a rhedeg i fyny ac i lawr grisiau. Mae Ben Nevis wedi codi aof arnaf braidd, oherwydd bydd hynny'n 672 hediad o risiau.
Ond mae'r adnod hon yn rhoi sicrwydd beunyddiol i mi. Mae'n rhan ohonof i nawr. Does dim rhaid i mi edrych arni hyd yn oed. Gallaf weld fy mod yn gorwneud pethau, a bod pethau y mae angen i mi eu hwynebu a delio â nhw. Dyna'r ffordd mae'n rhaid i mi fynd.
