My wife and I were told we’d likely never have children – even if we went through certain procedures

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘My wife and I were told we’d likely never have children – even if we went through certain procedures. I was born with a “defect”, and after both of us went through some tests, I discovered I had one or two other issues that added insult to injury.

‘While we believed that God could fully heal me, we initially did what anyone who’d just had their dreams seemingly crumble in front of them would do: we got a cat and immediately fell in love with him.

‘We changed our careers and moved in with my in-laws while my wife started a degree at university. Occasionally, we reminded ourselves that God could heal me. But would he?

‘One night, I felt prompted to read Psalm 128. I loved the sound of verse 2 about eating the fruit of my labour, and blessings and prosperity being mine, but it was verse 3 that stopped me in my tracks: “Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.”

‘In that moment, it was like I had received a message directly from my heavenly Father, saying, “I’m just letting you know that it’s done. This is happening!”

‘A few weeks later, my wife started experiencing abdominal discomfort and went to see the doctor, who advised that she get a pregnancy test.

‘The thing is, when doctors have repeatedly told you that you’re probably not pregnant, you have trouble believing otherwise. At least, that was the case with us. So, even though God had told me "this is happening", my doubt exceeded my trust and, not wanting to waste money, I told her to buy the cheapest pregnancy test.

‘Long story short, that night my wife called me to the bathroom. She held up one of those cheap tests and my jaw hit the floor. I demanded a more expensive test, obviously, but that didn’t change the result.

‘Today, 12 years later, we’ve been blessed with three gorgeous girls who are really good at eating the fruit of our labour, and who bring us joy every single day.

‘If God can bless someone like me whose faith was smaller than a mustard seed, what can he do for you?’
