Reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
Rhesymau i gredu ym mhŵer y Beibl
‘In 2003 I went to Uganda. I was treasurer of a charity and I went to visit the work I'd been supporting. I had never been abroad before and never gone on a long-haul flight so it was a major event for me, more so because a few years previously I'd had ME and I had been off work for 10 months.
‘I wasn't well when I got there, and I remember one night lying under a mosquito net saying to the Lord, “You wanted me here, I'm trusting you but I don't know what this is all about.”
‘My profession was in health promotion. I realised that God wanted me to experience what it was like to be ill and not to be able to get any help. During that time, I attended the funeral of a three-year-old girl who died of malaria because they couldn't get her to hospital.
‘One night it was pitch black, and the only way I could see where I was going was with a torch, and Psalm 119.105 came to me, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” I thought, God's word will only show me one step at a time. That was a very vivid illustration.
‘The next day I went for a walk through the sights, sounds and smells of the village. I felt the Lord saying, “Thelma, can you feel my heart?”
‘Now I knew why I had had to go to Uganda. My profession was public health – this was clearly absent here.
‘Shortly after my return home, I was invited by my work to enroll for an MSc in Public Health. I thought this strange as I was approaching retirement age. I had no A-levels and no degree. Yet, I thought back to Uganda – was this the next step? After several years of part-time study, at the age of 60 I graduated with an MSc in Public Health. Within days, I was invited to be a voluntary consultant and join a group to write the health promotion strategy for a Christian charity working internationally.
‘One step at a time, the Lord was fulfilling his plan for my life, and he continues to do so.’
‘Yn 2003 es i Uganda. Roeddwn yn drysorydd elusen ac es i ymweld â'r gwaith roeddwn wedi bod yn ei gefnogi. Doeddwn i erioed wedi bod dramor o'r blaen nac erioed wedi bod ar daith bell mewn awyren felly roedd yn ddigwyddiad mawr i mi, yn fwy felly oherwydd ychydig flynyddoedd ynghynt roedd ME arna i a bûm i ffwrdd o'r gwaith am 10 mis.
‘Doeddwn i ddim yn dda pan gyrhaeddais i yno, a dwi’n cofio un noson gorwedd o dan rwyd mosgito yn dweud wrth yr Arglwydd, “Roeddet ti eisiau fi yma, dw i’n ymddiried ynot ti ond dydw i ddim yn gwybod beth mae hyn i gyd yn ei olygu.”
‘Ym maes hybu iechyd oedd fy mhroffesiwn. Sylweddolais fod Duw eisiau i mi brofi sut brofiad oedd bod yn sâl a pheidio â gallu cael unrhyw help. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwnnw, mynychais angladd merch dair oed a fu farw o falaria oherwydd na allent ei chael i'r ysbyty.
‘Un noson roedd hi’n bygddu, a’r unig ffordd i mi weld i ble’r oeddwn i’n mynd oedd â fflachlamp, a daeth Salm 119.105 i’m cof, “Y mae dy air yn llusern i'm troed, ac yn oleuni i'm llwybr.” Meddyliais, dim ond un cam ar y tro y bydd gair Duw yn ei ddangos i mi. Roedd yn ddarlun byw iawn.
‘Y diwrnod canlynol es i am dro drwy olygfeydd, synau ac arogleuon y pentref. Teimlais yr Arglwydd yn dweud, “Thelma, a elli di deimlo fy nghalon?”
‘Nawr roeddwn i’n gwybod pam fy mod wedi gorfod mynd i Uganda. Fy mhroffesiwn oedd iechyd y cyhoedd – roedd hyn yn amlwg yn absennol yma.
‘Yn fuan ar ôl dychwelyd adref, cefais wahoddiad gan fy ngwaith i gofrestru ar gyfer MSc mewn Iechyd y Cyhoedd. Roeddwn i'n meddwl bod hyn yn rhyfedd gan fy mod yn agosáu at oedran ymddeol. Doedd gen i ddim lefel A na gradd. Ond eto, meddyliais yn ôl am Uganda – ai hwn oedd y cam nesaf? Ar ôl sawl blwyddyn o astudio'n rhan-amser, yn 60 oed graddiais gydag MSc mewn Iechyd y Cyhoedd. O fewn dyddiau, cefais wahoddiad i fod yn ymgynghorydd gwirfoddol ac ymuno â grŵp i ysgrifennu’r strategaeth hybu iechyd ar gyfer elusen Gristnogol sy’n gweithio’n rhyngwladol.
‘Un cam ar y tro, roedd yr Arglwydd yn cyflawni ei gynllun ar gyfer fy mywyd, ac mae’n parhau i wneud hynny.’
