I work in an acute medical ward in a hospital in Scotland

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

'I work in an acute medical ward in a hospital in Scotland. Normally we are very busy. We have had some Covid cases. We have also had some patients who are quite poorly. We’ve had patients, elderly patients, who are dying. We have a strong belief about the presence of relatives when people are dying, but that’s not been allowed. We’ve used social media so that relatives can see them. But it’s been quite difficult.

'I work a lot with palliative care and I have strong views on what people remember. They remember what upset them. As a nurse, I try to make sure that the little details are right for people, and that’s been hard.

'Many years ago, I lost a child. The scriptures that came to me then – Psalm 91 and Psalm 31 – have meant even more to me now. In Psalm 31, there’s a line that says, ‘I am always in your care’. That sums up, at the moment, how I am situated. I know God cares for me in a minute way, and therefore I must rest in his hope. I haven’t to fear.

'Reassurance is a big part of nursing. Your attitude has to be tempered with a deep security, and a deep sense that you are there for them. That’s the art of nursing, compassion. There’s a lot of fear in the world right, now, but I know that, through Him, I needn’t be scared.'
