My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘I work alone and remotely. And I’m in the season of life where a lot of my friends are getting married and having kids. I’m going to a lot of weddings and I go on my own. It’s a mixture of feelings. I’m so happy for my friends, but it magnifies my own situation.
‘One day I was travelling with work. I was in a hotel. It was dark and I was alone. I saw that I was so alone. I thought that, if I just disappeared, no one would notice.
‘That same day I was reading the Bible. I was reading it in a year, and this verse is from Genesis, so it was early on. It’s about Hagar, when God has spoken to her. It says, “She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me’.”
‘Even in the hotel, God sees me. Even if I feel invisible, I am visible to God. He sees me.
‘I’ve got that up on my mirror so that I can see it every day. Everywhere I go, whatever situation I am in, even if a man doesn’t notice me, God sees me. I recite it to myself when I feel vulnerable.
‘It gives you that sense that what you do matters and who you are matters, so if you don’t matter to someone in that sense right now, you still matter to God. My values lies with Him. I’m not alone.
‘It’s been a very empowering verse for me. It’s stopped me from putting things off until I’m married.’
