Reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I was brought up in a Christian family but I turned my back on everything in my late teens. I succeeded academically, but I had a quite hard party lifestyle for quite a while. It caught up with me. There were periods of heavy drinking and periods of severe depression. If I hadn’t stopped the wild lifestyle, it could have been disastrous.
‘I moved to Wales in 2013 and in 2015 I began learning Welsh. I started reading the Bible in Welsh. Beibl.net is the Bible in modern-day, spoken Welsh. I wanted to improve my Welsh and I was going to get my life back on track, again.
‘Reading the Bible in Welsh has had an impact in terms of strengthening my faith. It’s a new language for me, so I have to concentrate more. In a new language, you hear different things. There are different nuances. Things are expressed differently. It’s been like reading the Bible for the first time.
‘It really speaks to me in a way that it never spoke to me in English. I grew up thinking that the Bible was the norm. But, when I turned my back on the faith, I saw it as part of the tradition, my parents’ life. For years, I didn’t think about the Bible, let alone read it.
‘I’ve just started reading the New Testament again. I’ve just finished Acts. I sit in my kitchen in the morning with a cup of tea and my Bible. It’s become normal life. It sets me up for the day. If you’d told me 10 years ago that this would be the case, I would have laughed. I would have thought that I wouldn’t still be alive.
‘The partying is over. I have recently had a period of depression, which I’m coming out of now. In the past, I would have sat in a pub on my own and drank, but now I know that’s not the answer. I can pray about it and read the Bible.’
‘Cefais fy magu mewn teulu Cristnogol ond trois fy nghefn ar bopeth yn fy arddegau hwyr. Llwyddais yn academaidd, ond bues yn partïo’n eithaf caled am gryn amser. Daliodd i fyny gyda mi. Cafwyd cyfnodau o yfed yn drwm a chyfnodau o iselder difrifol. Pe na bawn i wedi stopio’r ffordd wyllt o fyw, gallai fod wedi bod yn drychinebus.
‘Symudais i Gymru yn 2013 ac yn 2015 dechreuais ddysgu Cymraeg. Dechreuais ddarllen y Beibl yn Gymraeg. Beibl.net yw'r Beibl mewn Cymraeg modern, lafar. Roeddwn i eisiau gwella fy Nghymraeg ac roeddwn i'n mynd i gael fy mywyd yn ôl ar y trywydd iawn, unwaith eto.
‘Mae darllen y Beibl yn Gymraeg wedi cael effaith o ran cryfhau fy ffydd. Mae'n iaith newydd i mi, felly mae'n rhaid i mi ganolbwyntio mwy. Mewn iaith newydd, rydych chi'n clywed gwahanol bethau. Mae yna arlliw gwahanol. Mynegir pethau'n wahanol. Mae wedi bod fel darllen y Beibl am y tro cyntaf.
‘Mae o wir yn siarad â mi mewn ffordd na siaradodd â mi yn Saesneg erioed. Cefais fy magu yn meddwl mai'r Beibl oedd y norm. Ond, pan wnes i droi fy nghefn ar y ffydd, fe’i gwelais fel rhan o’r traddodiad, bywyd fy rhieni. Am flynyddoedd, ni feddyliais am y Beibl, heb sôn am ei ddarllen.
‘Dw i newydd ddechrau darllen y Testament Newydd eto. Rydw i newydd orffen Actau. Rwy'n eistedd yn fy nghegin yn y bore gyda phaned a fy Meibl. Mae wedi dod yn rhan o fywyd. Mae'n fy mharatoi ar gyfer y dydd. Pe buasech wedi dweud wrthyf 10 mlynedd yn ôl mai hyn fyddai fy hanes, byddwn wedi chwerthin. Byddwn wedi meddwl na fyddwn yn dal yn fyw.
‘Mae’r partïo drosodd. Yn ddiweddar, rydw i wedi cael cyfnod o iselder, yr wy’n dod allan ohono nawr. Yn y gorffennol, byddwn wedi eistedd mewn tafarn ar fy mhen fy hun ac wedi yfed, ond nawr gwn nad dyna'r ateb. Gallaf weddïo amdano a darllen y Beibl.’
