I was born with quite a serious heart condition that affects blood flow through the heart

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I was born with quite a serious heart condition that affects blood flow through the heart. I felt different from everybody else. I got out of breath and found PE difficult. I gave it up when I was in Year 11.

‘When I was 17 I had corrective heart surgery including a valve replacement. Afterwards, my vocal chords were damaged and I couldn’t talk. I also suffered from nerve damage which meant I couldn’t walk either. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I spent three months in Great Ormond Street Hospital. It was quite a scary time, but I felt that God was in it.

‘I’ve always been drawn to the line in Psalm 23 which says, “even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me”. I faced that when I was 17. When I had my daughter, I faced death again. And in 2019 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. They did a lumpectomy. I had radiotherapy and my last mammogram was clear.

‘Psalm 23 reminds me that no matter how near death you are, God is still with you. I feel like God has always been with me. On the days that I really struggle, something will remind me of that. I’m classed as medically extremely vulnerable, yet I’m still here a year on in the pandemic. Psalm 23 gives me hope.’
