My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘I was 34 and divorced. I’d been in and out of relationships and I was getting tired of it. One evening I sat in my apartment and watched the sun go down and the shade come into the room. I thought, “This can’t be my life”. I grabbed the car keys and went to the local church.
‘I didn’t really hear what the minister said. But at the end he said, “Come to Jesus and he will wash you clean, as white as snow”. I thought I needed that. Afterwards, I drove round to tell my aunt and burst into tears. She had been praying for me for years.
‘I also told my brother. He came round with a Bible and signed me up to a Bible study group at the university. I didn’t have any expectations of what that would be like. On the first evening, I can remember we studied Philippians. In Philippians 1.6 it says that God “began a good work in you” and “will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus”. I was reading the Bible, often until midnight because I had such a hunger to find out more. But this verse showed me that it was going to be a process, a process of cleansing. I can’t put it into words, the transformation that has happened.
‘This verse has given me something to hang onto over the years. When I feel low, that verse comes back to me. That scripture has been there my whole life since. All of Scripture is life for me, but it encompasses everything for me knowing that God is working in my life.’
