My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
'I grew up in Zimbabwe. I used to be one of Mrs Mugabe’s bodyguards. After a few years the First Lady said that I should consider enhancing my education. So, I came to South Chelsea college for a couple of years. That was when the economy back home plummeted.
I knew there was nothing to go back for, so my wife and I decided that I should resign, which was a big decision to make. My last assignment had been Nelson Mandela stepping down. I’d been rubbing shoulders with big VIPs, Bill Clinton, Tabu Mbeke and suddenly I was working in McDonalds.
My friends were laughing at me. Then, my wife, who is a nurse, got a job in Jersey. I stayed where I was in Maidenhead. I said it was because of my son’s education, but it wasn’t. I just didn’t want to follow her.
We were separated for six months. It still makes me emotional now to think about it. I read Deuteronomy 8.6 which I always read when I feel far from home. It reminds me not to forget that I’ve been brought to a land of plenty, not to forget where we are or how we got there.
When I read these verses, I felt stupid. I blamed myself. After six months, my wife and I got back together. I would have been lost without my wife. After we got back together, God presented us with a beautiful daughter. When I look at her I think, "If God had not intervened at that time, where would I be now?"'
