Reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
Rhesymau i gredu ym mhŵer y Beibl
‘I read Psalm 139 most days, because it’s such an intimate psalm, especially now, in such an anxious time. It’s about God knowing us so intimately. It always affects me when I read it. It touches me deep in my heart.
‘When I first read it I was in my 20s and immediately I thought, “This is something that I would like to be read at my funeral”. I wrote a note about that in one of my Bibles. I was a journalist then. Thirty years on I’m a team vicar in the Church of England. I took a funeral this morning, and I suppose I take Psalm 139 to other people’s funerals. I have done quite a lot of funerals recently. Some of them have been Covid. It’s such a privilege to do and to hold that space for people in a difficult time.
‘Psalm 139 is all about comfort really. I’ve been living alone for the last few months, but I know that God is with me even though my family aren’t at the moment. God is absolutely there with me. That gets me that God is so close to us and it’s so very, very comforting at the moment.
‘My daughter is expecting at the moment and that’s in Psalm 139 which is true for her too. Verse 18 is what I like particularly: “I come to the end – I am still with you”. Oh! That makes me so thankful to God. It’s a prayer for others, as well as a reflection for myself.’
‘Rwy’n darllen Salm 139 bron bon dydd, oherwydd ei fod yn salm mor agos atoch, yn enwedig nawr, mewn cyfnod mor bryderus. Mae'n ymwneud â Duw yn ein hadnabod mor agos. Mae bob amser yn effeithio arnaf wrth ei ddarllen. Mae'n fy nghyffwrdd yn ddwfn yn fy nghalon.
‘Pan ddarllenais hi gyntaf roeddwn yn fy 20au ac ar unwaith meddyliais, “Dyma rywbeth yr hoffwn gael ei ddarllen yn fy angladd”. Ysgrifennais nodyn am hynny yn un o fy Meiblau. Roeddwn yn gweithio yn y maes newyddiaduriaeth bryd hynny. Ddeng mlynedd ar hugain yn ddiweddarach rydw i'n ficer tîm yn Eglwys Loegr. Cymerais angladd y bore yma, ac mae'n debyg fy mod yn mynd â Salm 139 i angladdau pobl eraill. Rwyf wedi gwneud cryn dipyn o angladdau yn ddiweddar. Bu rhai ohonyn nhw’n rhai Covid. Mae'n gymaint o fraint i’w wneud a chynnal y gofod hwnnw i bobl mewn cyfnod anodd.
‘Mae Salm 139 yn ymwneud â chysur mewn gwirionedd. Rydw i wedi bod yn byw ar fy mhen fy hun dros yr ychydig fisoedd diwethaf, ond gwn fod Duw gyda mi er nad yw fy nheulu ar hyn o bryd. Mae Duw yn hollol yno gyda mi. Mae hynny'n fy sicrhau bod Duw mor agos atom ni ac mae mor gysurlon ar hyn o bryd.
‘Mae fy merch yn disgwyl ar hyn o bryd ac mae hynny yn Salm 139 sy'n wir amdani hefyd. Adnod 18 yw'r hyn rwy'n yn arbennig o hoff ohono: “a phe gorffennwn hynny, byddit ti'n parhau gyda mi”. O! Mae hynny'n fy ngwneud mor ddiolchgar i Dduw. Mae’n weddi dros eraill, yn ogystal ag yn fyfyrdod i mi fy hun.’
