I had some dark times in my life when I lacked certainty

My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible

‘I had some dark times in my life when I lacked certainty and John 6.37 gave me the thought that I didn’t have to be perfect. I realised that, lo and behold, I wasn’t perfect. It says, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me: and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out”. That’s helped because all I had to attain was attainable: I just had to be myself.

‘I have been married for nearly 60 years and I have had cancer and now Parkinson’s. I used to be active in the church and preach, but I can’t do that now. The enforced retirement wasn’t good. This verse helps me now because I can’t do any of the things that I once did.

‘The future is with Christ, but I live in the now as far as I can. I have had a very good life. I have travelled and I have got two children. But this verse still sustains me. I don’t have anything to offer now except my terrible jokes.’
