Built on the same site as Solomon's Temple to replace the Temple that was destroyed by the Babylonians. Built in around 516 BC it was finally destroyed in AD 70 by the Romans. The second temple was originally thought to have been built to the same dimensions as the first temple but was changed a number of times during its lifetime. The most significant change was the complete rebuild instigated by Herod the Great which hugely expanded the area of the temple courts and entirely rebuilt the edifice of the Temple. John's Gospel suggests that Herod's Temple took 46 years to complete. Despite its complete rebuild, Herod's Temple was still known as the Second Temple.
