Sargon II

A son of Tiglath-Pileser III who appears to have seized the throne from his brother Shalmaneser V and ruled Assyria from 722-705 BC. Although only mentioned in the Old Testament in Isaiah 20.1 as capturing Ashdod, he was the leader of the army who destroyed the city of Samaria and its surrounding region in 722 BC.
