Sanhedrin

An assembly of judges who ruled over Judea in the post-exilic period. They had authority for all religious and political life – an authority they needed to negotiate with the Romans during the Roman period. The Sanhedrin are mentioned in the Gospels as being convened to oversee the trial of Jesus.
