Matthew

Otherwise known as Matthew the evangelist. One of the 12 disciples of Jesus. In Matthew's Gospel his name is given as Matthew a tax collector (9.9); in Luke 5.27 and Mark 2.14 the tax collector called to be a disciple was called Levi. Christian tradition associates these two together and attributes the writing of the first Gospel, Matthew's Gospel, to this Matthew.
