Levite

A descendant of Levi.The Levites were given no land in the apportionment of the Promised Land. Instead the landed tribes were required to give to them a tithe of their own produce in exchange for their service in the Temple, as Priests, temple musicians or doorkeepers. By the first century the title Levite was used of Temple officials who were not priests but who were descended from the tribe of Levi.
