Levi

The name of one of the sons of Jacob and Leah who gave his name to the tribe of Levi. The Levites were given no land in the apportionment of the Promised Land. Instead the landed tribes were required to give to them a tithe of their own produce in exchange for their service in the Temple, as priests, temple musicians or doorkeepers. Levi is also the name given in Mark and Luke to the tax collector who followed Jesus (see entry on Matthew).
