Otherwise known as the Praetorian guard, a unit of elite soldiers whose role was to provide personal security for the emperor as well as to other key governors around the empire. They are mentioned in Philippians 1.13 as guarding Paul though this does not necessarily imply that his imprisonment was in Rome, it could have been anywhere where there a unit of the guard was posted.
